I highly recommend the Sisters of the Salt duology by Erin A. Craig! The first book, House of Salt and Sorrows (2019), is a twisty, fast-paced story, sort of "The Twelve Dancing Princesses" crossed with a Gothic murder mystery/ghost story. As a bonus, there's a romance subplot that doesn't take over the whole story. The second book, House of Roots and Ruin (2023), is a bit slower-paced (at least up to the climactic scenes), but still hard to put down. The very ending made me want another book too!
However: My queendom (or at least my loyal readership) for a modern author of Gothic-style novels who's willing to do the tiny bit of research required to find out how gas lighting works. (Not gaslighting, but gas lighting.) I know I've ranted this rant before, but seriously! How do you think gas lights are turned on via a switch, in the absence of electricity? Explain the mechanics of it to me. Failing that (which you must), try reading some actual Victorian literature and pick up the basics. I sometimes wonder if these authors think gas lighting is some made-up steampunk thing that never actually existed.
But read the books. They're very good.
