Listening to: Milk Street Radio

So the other day I decided it was time to update my profile picture online. I’d been using one Sophie took at the gallery back in 2016, pretty much everywhere (and I just realized there are a few places where I haven’t changed it yet). So I took a selfie, in the den, in sunlight. Big mistake. That light brought out all the lines on my face, ones that I didn’t even realize were there because mostly I look at myself in the bathroom mirrors. Apparently the lighting in our bathrooms is much more forgiving. My hair even looked gray in this picture. And I realized oh boy this is how other people must see me all the time. Looking about 10 years older than I am, rather than 10 years younger as I look in the mirrors. Lord knows I’ve never had any illusions that I’m pretty. But this was pretty awful.

Am I still using the picture?

 Yep.

Listening to: “I Can Hear You” by They Might Be Giants, “Everything You Want” by Vertical Horizon

Finished: The Moon-Spinners. 3 stars; book #6 for the year. A product of its time, I guess, published in the early 60s. The heroine/narrator never seemed to know whether she was a mere helpless female or indignant at being treated like one. And for a thriller it was very slow-paced, giving the narrator pages upon pages of time to rhapsodize about every detail of the landscape (none of which ultimately affected anything; this story could have taken place almost anywhere, but clearly the author wanted to show off her knowledge). And up until the last perhaps one-tenth of the book, most of the real action was told rather than shown. Dreary.
